President Bola Tinubu’s administration is actively working to improve environmental protection in Nigeria through a blend of policy, infrastructural development, and regional collaborations, anchored on his “Renewed Hope” agenda. Key initiatives include:
Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions: Chaired by President Tinubu, this committee drives green initiatives, coordinates federal institutions, and manages non-oil & non-gas climate actions.
Green Industrial Zone (Evergreen City): The president approved the establishment of Nigeria’s first Green Industrial Zone, designed to be a manufacturing hub for renewable energy and climate-adaptation technologies.
Tree Planting Campaign: A commitment to planting 25 million trees by 2030 to combat deforestation and desertification.
Environmental Health Policies (2025): Four new policies were launched in February 2025, including the National Environmental Health Regulation 2024 (for waste management and pollution), a Greenhouse Gas Emission Register, a Carbon Analysis Framework, and a Carbon Print Certificate.
Renewed Hope Climate Change Awareness Tour (REHCCAT): A nation-wide campaign launched in March 2026 to move climate dialogue from policy rooms to local communities.
Global Flood Disaster Management Project: Launched in November 2025 to shift from a reactive to a proactive, data-driven approach to flood management.
Energy Transition & CNG: Promotion of cleaner energy sources, including Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and electric vehicles, to reduce dependency on fossil fuels.
Key Focus Areas
Marine & Coastal Protection: Collaborations between the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy to establish forest and coastal guards to protect waterways, combat illegal logging/fishing, and manage resources.
Ogoni Cleanup & Restoration: Progress in the cleanup of Ogoniland, with 94% completion in Phase 1 of mangrove restoration and significant strides in providing potable water to 45 communities.
Eco-Friendly Security: Launch of the Nigeria Police Force Green Initiative to reduce the carbon footprint of security operations.
The administration is focusing on leveraging public-private partnerships to fund these initiatives and aims to reach net-zero emissions between 2050 and 2070.
